I'm pretty excited because behind me, I have a new product that I've been looking at for quite a while. I received it a few days ago and I've been testing it, and I've got to say it's probably my new favorite film gear—or at least my favorite film gear since gimbals came out. It's from a company called Digitalfoto. I've worked with them in the past to come up with an updated version of their Power Base for the DJI RS3 Gimbal. If you haven't seen that video, the Power Base system that I use is a really cool way to make the gimbal more productive and efficient when using it on set.

But anyway, back to what I'm excited about in this video, which is the Digitalfoto 360 SE. It's a spinning camera rig. Basically, you have a platform, and the camera can spin completely 360 around the product. So in this video, I'm going to review the 360 spinning camera rig from Digitalfoto. As always, we will give our honest thoughts and only recommend products that we absolutely love ourselves. I'll leave a link in the description for the exact 360 spinning rig that I'm using if you want to pick up the same one.

My company is often hired to shoot food commercial projects. For most of those shoots, I've used my Kessler Cineslider, which is a 5 foot long linear camera slider. It also has a motorized system for motion-controlled movements. It's been a lot of fun to work with, but one of the challenges with it is you're constantly battling focus because the camera is constantly moving further away or closer to the product. Now, that's not really a huge deal. Of course, you can have a focus puller; you can track focus within the camera. But generally speaking, I've always had in my mind this idea to have some sort of pivot point under the table, which gives me a rotational move around the product, which would keep the focus always on the product.

And for years, I've been thinking about this. Well, I started to do research one day and realized that this product actually does exist, but I wasn't seeing something that I felt was high enough quality until I came across the Digitalfoto one. It's honestly so easy to get a very usable product shot with this thing very quickly. You're not going to get like a swooping crane shot with this, but you're going to get left to right or right to left or again full 360 around the product. And again, there are so many different things you could do with that. For example, you can do transition shots where you have a product on the table, and then it whips all the way around, and you speed ramp the clip, and then it transitions into a second clip. And of course, there are so many different products that you can switch between. It's infinite, as long as the product is small enough that it can fit within like a macro lens seam.

When you're using a macro lens and capturing really close-up shots of food products, for example, the focus is absolutely critical. This is why it takes so long on set to set up everything because you have your lights, your cameras, you know, you have your product, you have the food stylus and everything. And you can spend the whole day and only get a few great usable food shots. With this 360 spinner, I'm probably only going to use it a fraction of the full 360. I think it's going to save me a lot of time because I can skip all of the effort that is going to go into making sure it's in focus.

On a side note, it's really important to bring on a food stylist if you're doing paid commercial work. So for this shoot, since it was just for a YouTube video, we didn't have a food stylist, and food styling is an art. It takes a long time. We ordered these dessert-like cake things, like a cheesecake and a chocolate cake, and we only had one option for each dessert. Normally, on set, like if we're doing a pizza shoot, we would have dozens of pizzas throughout the whole day that are brought fresh. Food stylists are important. Needless to say, though, the cake was very delicious.

So overall, the way the system works is it has a base platform, it has a center rod that goes up from the bottom, and then it has two pretty heavy-duty brackets that go off from the center point. One side has a counterweight with a weight that they do include in the package, and then on the other side, there's another bracket system, which is where the rail system is. And that's where the camera is mounted. And naturally, if you've used a crane or a jib, you'll be familiar with counterbalance systems. So at the top, there's also a counterweight for how heavy the camera is when it's off to one side. You want to counterbalance that as well. And because this product doesn't use any cheap plastic, it actually uses high-quality materials and it uses real weights, it's very sturdy. So the results are you're going to get very, very smooth, buttery smooth footage from this when you're using it. And of course, when you're doing product shots, you typically use macro lenses, so you would expect a product like this to be very sturdy because macro lenses tend to show any little bit of wobble or jitter. And I should say you can introduce wobble or sort of like a vertical bounce to it. So just be aware of that. Make sure you are counterbalancing it. And also, it's probably best to let it go around a couple of times before you actually end up using the shot in the edit just to make sure any of the wobble from where you released your hand isn't making it into the footage.

So what's in the shipped box when you receive it? The box itself is fairly big. It has all the pieces—the base plate, the center rod, the top plate, it has brackets, the rail system, the ball head. Actually, a pretty good tripod ball head for connecting the camera. And besides that, it has several different backdrops. So you get this silk diffusion white backdrop, then you have this other thing that's like a sleeve. You can reverse it, and on one side, it has black and silver. On the other side, when you flip it inside out, it has gold and white. Now, at the very bottom where the big weight is and where you have the main bracket system, they've included a connecting point which holds the various backdrops. It's a pretty good system, and the point of it is to be opposite of where the camera is with your product in the middle, meaning that as the camera rotates, the background system will always be in the back of the shot. And in that setup, that means that you don't really need to worry about where you're filming because as the camera rotates, you're not going to see anything else but the background that you put on the system. And if you have your lights set up on stands around the 360 spinning rig, then the lighting itself isn't going to change on the product itself. But as the camera rotates around, it's going to get a really creative shot. And like I said, there's so many different options with this rig, so another one is you don't even have to use the background; chances are it'll just be out of focus and not a distraction.

Now let's talk about what I think could be improved with the product or changed. I think the center rod should be adjustable in height. The top surface where you put your product sits at about 29 inches off the ground. That means that the current rig can't be slid underneath your average table unless you were to lift up the table. The other thing is, because of this part here, I can't slide the camera forward past this point unless I were to take the whole thing apart and then place it on the other side. Then I could, of course, get the camera closer. Now, I did find something I had lying around that I think will solve the problem for me. So maybe in the future, they could include something like this. I think that will be good for what I'm going for.

So, I talked a bit about comparing this Digitalfoto spinning rig to others on the market. It seems that this product is significantly better built and designed. For that reason alone, I would recommend this over the others. Just in general, if you're looking for a new way to capture maybe product shots or get creative, let's say you're a YouTuber or even on set for commercial work like what I'm doing, this is a product I can see a lot of people liking. I had a lot of fun setting this up, testing it, and using it in different scenarios. And I look forward to using this actually on set. And as mentioned, I'll leave a link in the description for the exact 360 spinning rig that I'm using if you want to pick up the same one.
