In this video Will shows you how to sound proof a room using different materials such as Sonopan, drywall, and insulation. Sound proofing can be challenging since sound can be very loud, but with a simple approach and a bit of a budget, you can sound proof most rooms in a weekend!

In this video we're going to talk about how to sound proof a room i'll show you the different materials that we're using such as this acoustic green sound panel board as well as how to place it onto the wall i came up with a cool technique that i haven't seen anywhere else and it was fairly cheap and it works really well and we'll also talk about the importance of soundproofing a room because you know audio is important when you're recording.

Wideos since our last studio update we have patched all the drywall in the whole studio we've built this entire new wall to make this room a lot larger and we've also retrofitted the lights here to led so daylight balance led lights those are a lot brighter way more efficient there's no flicker no heat so much much better than the ugly fluorescent tungsten lights that were in the studio before we've sealed the windows we'll probably put a backdrop system there and if you remember from the last video that creepy door so that's been sealed as well so in this room since we've expanded it made it a little larger we're gonna store gear in this area and i'm also going to put my drum kit in this corner i think and that's where lots of insulation comes in or in this case this green 4 bait sheet is called sauna pan and it works really really well it's made out of recycled wood in my opinion i would say this does a better job than insulation but when we got this studio most of it was already like this with just the drywall so this wall and this wall here are all exterior walls they're actually concrete cinder blocks which is great for not allowing a lot of sound to go out or in but let's say a loud truck goes by we will hear the loud rumble through the concrete or if i'm playing drums you know our neighbors will be able to hear that as well so for more than one reason we do want to sound proof this area and since that was already done i'm just going to leave it as insulation the metal studs and then the drywall that will do a pretty good job in front of the concrete center blocks however in this area since it doesn't have the studs or the insulation i'm gonna use the acoustic panels instead now since this material is pretty soft you know you can pick it apart with your hands you can't just put a regular screw through otherwise it'll go all the way through and it won't really hold the material up to the wall it doesn't weigh too much, i think it's like 26 pounds per one but it's still enough that you can't use just a regular screw.

So online people talk about using a screw and a metal washer and then you put the screw through and that will work well but when i was shopping at home depot the washers were pretty expensive and you know i'm gonna need a few hundred of them and then i realized that roofing screws come with these green caps so what we did is we bought a whole box of those and i just removed the plastic caps and then bought two inch drywall screws and i'm putting those through it by doing it this way by using the drywall screws and then the plastic washers that come with roofing nails it's a pretty good system to prevent the screws from going all the way through the material it's a lot a lot cheaper than going the route of just buying washers also i should note that you can leave this material exposed however i wouldn't recommend it because this stuff comes off really easy and it's a huge cleanup all on the floor here just by installing them it's it's everywhere the final look will actually be drywall in front of this that's what they recommend online they want you to put your framing with insulation then this then drywall so if you're looking to sound proof your room and you aren't really sure what to do if you can find this stuff i would suggest getting it it does a really really great job at soundproofing but there are some steps you need to take such as you do need to put the studs with insulation behind it if you don't have a thick wall like i do here with the concrete and then it's recommended to put drywall in front of it some people actually put two layers of drywall.

Now there's this other thin material that you can buy to put in front of it then the drywall i think it's called reflexor but i couldn't find that at home depot or other stores near me so i did not go that route but i've heard that does a pretty good job if you do need to go even a step further than that then i would recommend buying this stuff called green glue green glue comes in a tube and you can buy that at like home depot you basically use it with a caulking gun and you just put it in between the layers and it creates a solid soundproof bond between the two layers and apparently that works well with the sonopan green panel boards and drywall the sonopan acoustic board is pretty easy to cut and work with if you have a very sharp utility knife x-acto blade it should make it all the way through but mine was pretty dull so i wasn't able to do that it was chipping it away i'm using just a circular saw and it's making a huge mess so every single time i make a cut i have the shop vac to clean it all up if you have access to i believe it's called a track saw where you can attach a shop vac to it to collect the dust i highly suggest you do that because this stuff makes a huge mess when you cut it all right so that's pretty much it for soundproofing a room it's all about using as many many layers as you can if you have extra drywall laying around just use extra sheets of drywall if you can get access to this stuff the sauna pan i would definitely recommend using that as like i said it does work better than insulation i think however if you can't get access to this stuff that's all good just use a lot of insulation in any case when you're installing insulation or even this stuff wear a mask apparently this stuff is the sonopen stuff is non-toxic but why risk it it's green dyed wood chips so i don't really want to be breeding that stuff in and you probably don't either okay so that's how you sound proof of room it's all about layers just more more and more layers so sound can get trapped in between and then it gets less and less and uh yeah that's how you do it i hope that helps we have a ton of other videos on filmmaking so if that's something you're into definitely consider subscribing and hit the thumbs up if you like this video leave a comment down below if you're planning on soundproofing your room or if you already have what materials did you use share it in the comments it helps other people in this community who are doing the same thing as you so definitely share the information and knowledge that you have thanks for watching this video and we'll see you next time.
