The BEST Gimbal - DJI RS3 Pro Review And Why I Updated Gimbals - In this video, Will talks about the BEST camera gimbal on the market is and provides a full review of the DJI RS3 Pro. He also explains why he decides to upgrade camera gimbals from the Freefly Movi M5 to the DJI RS3 Pro.
In this one, we're talking about why I decided to update my Freefly M5 gimbal to the DJI RS3 Pro. This gimbal has a few extra features, but is it a better gimbal, and would I recommend it over something like this? Let's jump in.
So first off, I want to say that this gimbal has been incredible over the last several years. I believe it was Freefly that brought gimbal technology to the film industry in the form of a handheld device, and it really changed the game because it meant you can get very stable footage very easily. I've used this on probably 500 to maybe a thousand different shoots over the years, and I'm honestly surprised that it even still works because of all the use it's had. So why did I decide to update to the RS3 Pro? Well, one of the reasons is Ali owned the original Ronin S. It was missing a lot of the professional feel that this had. When the RS2 came out, it wasn't enough for me to want to make the switch. Then the RS3 gimbal came out, and it has just enough features, and I felt that it was time for me to finally update the gimbal.
If you use these original gimbals, you'll know that the batteries are pretty sketchy. You have to charge them with those two cables at the end. They tell you not to charge it to 100% unless you're going to use the batteries. If you don't use the batteries, they could catch on fire or explode. That's pretty scary, especially if it's in your bag with all your other camera gear, or in your house, or in your studio. Secondly, if you're not using it, you have to discharge it to 50%. The third thing is you can't use it to 0%. There is again a chance that it could catch on fire and explode. It's recommended to keep a Leo safe case so that if they do explode, it will hopefully stay within the case. The fact that these newer gimbals don't use Leo batteries, they just have like a built-in battery system, and you just charge it with a USB compared to always stressing about if I'm operating it properly.
One of the big features that everyone's talking about with this new gimbal is the fact that it has an autolock feature, and I can't stress enough how big of a deal that is. With the other Freefly MōVI gimbal, I've had scenarios where I start up the gimbal, and it just starts spinning like crazy. With this RS3 Pro gimbal, you can see that it's just perfectly locked. So, because you can just press one button, it'll lock all three axes in place. That means on set, you can place it down; it's going to save a bit of the battery because everything's locked, and the motors aren't running full, and it's just the peace of mind that you know the gimbal isn't going to fly around everywhere, which I've had happen multiple times. Having this be able to autolock is a big deal for gimbal operators.
As I mentioned, Ali had the original Ronin S. DJI didn't have this two-handle system. With the two handles, the degree of rotation you can turn is a lot smaller compared to just holding this with one or two handles at the bottom. On the Ronin one, that was resulting in footage where the panning was too quick, and it just didn't feel as good or as high-end as what I could do with a two-handle system. By the time the RS3 came out with all the additional features it had, plus the fact that I could also buy these extra handles, it made sense for me to update. Another reason is the M5 has a weight limit of 5 lb, but nowadays you may want to bulk up your setup a little bit more. You might want to have an M box on the front or a motor system or just use a higher-end camera that weighs a little more, and that's where this gimbal comes into play. It's around twice as heavy as the M5, which means I have the options to shoot on a Red with a nice quality lens on the front or on a fully kitted mirrorless camera.
I would say that the stabilization is on par with the M5 for the original gimbal coming out in 2014. Yeah, I'm impressed with how good their gimbal technology was back then. That being said, I don't think I need anything better than that in terms of getting a panning parallaxing shot around a subject. So the fact that the RS3 Pro can match that stabilization, I would say that's plenty for most gimbal operators. In terms of the build quality and design, I'm very impressed with what DJI did with this gimbal.
This is the RS3 Pro; it's the largest one, and that means that this space here is just the largest of all the gimbals, which will allow you to fit on larger cameras. They made a lot of the parts carbon fiber, which was a smart move because it's very strong but also lightweight. That's what Freefly did originally, and not a lot of other companies did that. Maybe it's because making parts out of plastic is just cheaper. So the fact that this is only around $11,000, and it's a carbon fiber, full-featured modern gimbal, it's very impressive compared to the Freefly MōVI M5 that I bought in 2014, which was, I think, 7 grand. I think nowadays I would choose this one over the M5, even though the M5 is still a great gimbal.
Just some of the touchscreen options it has on the back, you can through a cable or Bluetooth connect the camera to the gimbal and have greater control like start-stop recording, autofocus options. If you buy the combo, you can fit on the front like a Focus motor or Zoom motor if you buy their additional accessories. You can get this little LIDAR box that sits on the top of the camera, and it'll turn a manual lens into an autofocus lens, which is pretty cool. There's a couple of really great design features like this little twist knob, which allows you to microtune the adjustments so you can balance that axis very accurately, which is a huge help and I found that to speed things up. Like I mentioned before, you can through a cable connect the camera to the gimbal, and that's through some of the spots right here which run through the actual gimbal. Second to that, they have a switch here to go between panning and tilting. You have another one where it's like full FPV, where you can get the gimbal to actually rotate on its horizon. For me, I typically shoot on the PTF mode, which locks the horizon, and then you can go panning or you can go tilting, but it will not roll the camera on the horizon.
It's so easy to balance. Once you get a general balance on each axis, you can then go into the settings or use the DJI app, which I would recommend getting because it makes life a lot easier. You can just hit the auto calibrate option, and then it'll calibrate the system and balance it for you based on the weight that it senses, which again is amazing. For me, for $1,000, you can get a high-end gimbal. Very, very impressive: the build quality, the stabilization, the fact that it locks. I would highly recommend this gimbal. I wouldn't waste your time getting something like the rs1 or the rs2 at this stage. This is the third version, the RS3, and they've just thought of everything, they've tweaked everything, and made it as good as it can be.
Alright, so that's it on my initial thoughts on the RS3 Pro and why I decided to finally update my camera gimbal. This thing will probably be used for the next several years because this one is such a good gimbal and it is fully featured.
