Hey everyone what's going on I'm Ally and congratulations to the winners of the power to wise lavalier microphones we gave away 12 in total and I figured what better time than to do a video of Belyaev lair microphones the benefits of them when you'd want to use one and how to use one correctly.

Most lavalier microphones also known as lapel mics are omnidirectional microphones which means they record sound from all angles so regardless of where you choose to pin your mic as long as it's within a foot or so of the person's mouth you're going to record good sounding audio professional audio recorders do tend to prefer using shotgun mics to record audio they tend to sound a little fuller a little better you may have seen shotgun mics being used behind the scene shots of film sets where we have a boom operator well the thing on the end of that is a shotgun mic laughs makes her great in situations where you might be recording a wide shot where you wouldn't be able to show or have a boom operator on the side recording your audio in some filming situations you may want to hide your lav mic and you could do this by hiding it under someone's collar or under someone's shirt one thing I'm sure to always do even if I'm not hiding my lav mic but especially if I am is doing an audio test because sometimes when you hide a lav mic depending on the type of clothing you're wearing the type of material or the way that you're moving on camera you may pick up in your audio with that friction of the material rubbing against the mic on one of the first video shoots I ever did I was in charge of laughing up the talent I thought okay that's easy enough so I get my mic cable I plug it into the transmitter put on the talent listening to playback during testing and I can hear like this crackling during a lab off turned on just in the talent I'm looking at the camera to see what's going on and it turned out that I just didn't have the laughs cable plugged in and tightened all the way in the transmitter it took up about 20 minutes of crew time before we realized what the problem was learn from my mistake don't let that happen to you another mistake that you don't want to make when you're using a lavalier mic is being lazy about how you place it on someone so don't quickly throw it on someone with the cable expose loose you want to hide the laugh cable as best you can so that really the only part of it that is exposed is the microphone itself where you place the microphone is gonna depend on the type of shirt your subjects wearing ideally you want to place the mic a few inches below the chin and above the chest if they're wearing a collared shirt or a suit jacket you could place the lav mic on either side of that jacket you want to consider the direction that they're speaking in so let's say you have two people on camera speaking to one another if you're gonna have the first person you're laughing up speaking to the other person so they're looking to their left then you're gonna want to put your laugh mic on their left side and vice versa.

Okay so I'm going to show you a quick demonstration of how I would wear this laughs Mike with the most important element at the end of the demonstration so first I take the end of the laugh cable and put it through the top of my shirt bring the microphone over your shoulder make sure you've got some give and here's the key part you want to make a loop with the cable itself open up clasp of your microphone put the loop through it and the reason you want to make this loop is because it will reduce noises that could otherwise because from tension on the cable and with your loop in between the clasps you can place the mic accordingly make sure that we have our cable hidden underneath her shirt and Leslie you want to make sure the mic is pointing towards your mouth you wouldn't want it pointing off in the opposite direction and there you go those are the benefits of using a lav mic to record your audio and how to properly wear one tube get the best results thanks for checking this video out if you'd like to give us a thumbs up to let us know we'll and I release new bill making tutorials weekly here on our channel so to stay up-to-date subscribe and ding the bell so you're notified when we do release a new video thanks again and we'll see you in another video
