Coming from a premier background, I thought it would be super simple to grab still frames from my footage in Resolve. But guess what? It's not that simple. That's why I figured I'd create this quick tutorial showing you how to do it. And if you're new here, I'm Ali and Will, and I release weekly videos all about videography editing as well as gear reviews. Coming up soon, I'm going to be releasing a tutorial teaching people how to make their dialogue audio sound better. So, to stay tuned for that, subscribe to our channel.
Alright, let's hop into Resolve and get started. Oh, okay. So first off, I just want to point out that I'm working in DaVinci Resolve 18.5, the beta version. So, depending on what version of DaVinci you're on, likely you'll still be able to follow along. But I do know that up until this beta version, you didn't have the option to export a still frame from the Cut page. You do now, so we'll start there.
You can use the cursor and drag left or right to find the area of your clip you'd like to capture the image of. Go up to File, Export Current Frame as Still. Decide where you'd like to save it, name it whatever you'd like, and you can change the file type from JPEG to any of these other options. Usually, I go with a PNG file or JPEG, so that's good for me. Press Export.
If you're like me and you never use the Cut page, well, let's go over to the Edit page. On the Edit page, you can also use the program window and this slider here to find the area that you'd like to capture your still frame of. And like before, go up to File, Export Current Frame as Still. Name it, save it, and change the file type if you'd like to. Press Export.
Now, you can also export a still from the Color page. It's a little different. Let's go over there. Like the Edit page, you can use the slider to find your frame if you need to. Now, let's choose Gallery. Hover over your program window, right-click, and choose Grab Still, which shows up in our Gallery here. So, right-click on this little thumbnail, choose Export with Display LUT, name it, save it, and change the file type if you'd like to. Press Export.
I'll just go to the location I saved to, and there it is. So, there you go. That's how to capture and export a still frame from your footage.
On the side note, Will and I own a video production company in Toronto. We shoot commercials, corporate videos, all that good stuff. And we have a list in the description below for all of the gear that we use and recommend, as well as where we get the music that you can hear in this video. So if you're interested in any of that, look below. Have an awesome day! Thanks for checking this video out, and I hope to see you in another one. Thank you.
