My Custom DJI RS3 Gimbal Build (Battery Belt LIGHT AND PORTABLE) - My Custom DJI RS3 Gimbal Build (Battery Belt LIGHT AND PORTABLE) - In this video Will shows you all the parts he used to build out his custom DJI RS3 Pro gimbal. A few months back Will worked with DigitalFoto to create an updated version to their power base and now the latest version has a NATO clamp and works with the RS3.

Over the past few months, I've been going back and forth with a company called DigitalFoto, and we've been talking about one of their products for the Ronin gimbals. It allows you to take off the battery supply that comes with the Ronin (or the RS or RS2 or RS3 gimbals) and replace it with power from DTaP or PTAP. The benefits to this are obvious; it means you can connect it to things like a crane instead of your typical handheld setup. But beyond that, there's another way you can set up this gimbal, which is what I'm most excited about and what got me thinking about different ways that this could be designed in order to accomplish the idea that I had.

So, in going back and forth for the last few months, we did end up on a slightly different design than the original one they came out with. In this video, we're going to talk about the updated version to the RS2 or RS3 base plate that goes with the DJI RS3 gimbal. Thank you all right when we did it all right.

As I mentioned, this is the power base supply. I've gone through a few different ones since I got the DJI RS3. Then it got me thinking because I did want to use the gimbal with a small monitor. If you put the battery in the back of it, it just adds more weight. So, I thought this would allow me to have a battery belt system, run a cable to this, and then out of it through the DTaP, I could send power to the monitor. If you do have multi-hour shoots where you want the gimbal to be as light as possible, this is a solution for you.

When I first got the RS3 Gimbal and started to think about this battery belt setup, I went and purchased this base power supply thing from another brand. While it worked to accept power, the second I plugged the cable into the output to send power to the monitor, no joke, it started smoking, and I unplugged it immediately. I then did more research and found the DigitalFoto version of the product, which was this version that has a single input and then the DTaP output. I tested it immediately when I got it and successfully was able to power the monitor using the battery belt. That's great news. However, because this was built for the RS2, the RS3 has a slightly different connecting point. So when I connected it, it wobbled a little bit.

So then I reached out to DigitalFoto. They were very open to the feedback and wanted to work together to come up with a final product that worked with the RS3. After some communication, they sent an updated version, and that one I now use on the gimbal itself. And this one, as you might be able to see, has this piece right here. This is the bracket that keeps things stable because the other bracket from the original design didn't have the NATO clamp. I could not attach the second handle on this side. So to me, that was a problem making the product unusable.

I gave the feedback, saying you should add the NATO clamp so that it doesn't take away the original RS3's NATO mount on the side. So they did update it, meaning I can now plug in and connect the two handles. Still, have the power base, so I'm really happy with this setup. It's so much smaller than what used to be with the battery grip itself.

So, this is the original, you know, battery grip that comes with the gimbal. As you can imagine, if you take the base plate out and then have this, you know, at the bottom, it makes it so much taller. And I don't know, it's just not practical for my needs.

So, with my setup, I bought these Indie Pro micro-series batteries. These are really great, actually. They tell you the sort of charge on the side here. They have the DTaP output, which is also how you charge it. Then I bought this little connector at the back here so it can go on the belt. And then the cable runs up and connects to this part here so that I'm not carrying any battery weight, which is obviously ideal for this setup because gimbals are heavy, especially when the camera lens and the monitor are set up.

And having the battery on my belt and having the cable going up, it's not an issue with, you know, the cable being attached as you might think because either way, I'm holding the gimbal with both hands. As long as it's longer than my arms, it will work, which it is.

So, I'll leave the links in the description if you want to get any of these products that I recommend. I'll also leave links for the monitor and how I'm connecting the monitor to the bottom of the base plate. This isn't the actual original RS3 plate because I didn't actually need the original one. It's like another two inches longer than this one.

The way I've mounted the monitor to the back of the base plate I haven't seen before, and I think it's a pretty clever way to keep all the weight of the camera lens and monitor all in one spot. Because it makes bouncing the gimbal much easier, and I think the motors respond better to the closer center of gravity that this setup has.

And besides that, you could even buy a D-tap splitter cable to power other accessories. I do think this is a great solution for anyone who wants a smaller setup but also a lighter setup. Because trust me, I've been using gimbals since 2014 when I bought the Moby M5 from the company Freefly. Yeah, using gimbals for a prolonged period definitely messes with your back, and I, for sure, need to take care of my body as I get older.

So, for me, a big part of the motivation in trying to customize a gimbal is to get it to be lightweight and more efficient to use. So, if you want any of the products again, I will leave the links in the description so you can get those.
