In this video i'm going to show you a workaround way i found to reduce noise in your footage without a plug-in for free in premiere pro so let's hop in.
Before i show you the effect i like to use i want to quickly mention that there is another effect you can use in primer pro to reduce noise it's in the noise and grain folder called median and you'll notice it says legacy beside it this means that premiere will likely remove it in the future and what it basically does is it takes the average colors from the pixels in your video and blends the pixels together more but i find it makes your footage look a bit blotchier than the effect i'm going to show you also the median effect isn't gpu accelerated so it's a little slow to work with okay so here's my example clip and if we zoom in on a program monitor to 75 percent you can really see the noise in the dark spots of this shot so to reduce this noise let's go over to our effects panel and in the search bar type in vr you'll notice that that brings up a bunch of different vr effects and these effects are intended to be used on 360 degree footage but i found that a lot of these vr effects can also work well on regular non 360 footage so i'll just finish typing here the noise and here's the effect we're going to be working with in the video effects immersive video folder on the side note in will's how to create a glitch effect tutorial he shows you a few other vr effects that you can use so check that out i'll link it below okay let's drag this vrd noise effect onto our clip pop over to effect controls and by default our noise level is set to point 20. while the default has done a decent job at cleaning up the noise in this clip it's not only smoothed out my face too much but it's also sort of blurred the bottom edges of the frame here let's try bringing the noise level to point zero eight turn the effect off okay so that's what it looks like before.
Here's the after okay so for me this effect at .08 has helped to reduce the noise it hasn't done a perfect job but when we zoom out in a second it definitely looks better than it did without the effect and we're gonna deal with it affecting my face in just a second okay we no longer have that warp blending thing happening at the edge of the frame here now this effect is still smoothing out my skin to the point where it's looking artificial let's bring this back to fit screen so make sure your cursor's at the beginning of your clip and under the vrd noise effect select the ellipse tool here doing this has created an ellipse mask on our clip i'm going to reposition this mask around my face here okay so adding this mask has made the vrd noise effect only affect what's inside the mask we actually want it to do the opposite and to make it do the opposite under the mask here let's check mark inverted perfect so now the vrd noise effect is affecting everywhere in the frame except my face and we want the edge of this mask to be a bit more blended than it currently is so where it says mask feather let's change it to 150 so that the edge blends a lot more subtly let's go back to fit screen okay and now that we have our mask made where it says mask path click on the toggle which sets a keyframe what we're now going to do is have premiere pro track this mask so that as my face moves while i'm talking on camera the mask will move with it so to track it click on this play icon here if you aren't too familiar with motion tracking i highly recommend you check out my in-depth tutorial how to motion track and remove a logo improvement pro cc it explains motion tracking in perimeter pro in a lot more detail okay so premiere pro is done tracking let's check this out okay so while this effect isn't meant to denoise regular footage it still does a pretty good job and is a really quick solution if you don't want to spend money on the denoising plug-in and if you don't want to denoise your clip using after effects have you used any of the vr effects yet in premiere if so i would love to hear which ones you use and what you think of them so let me know in the comments below and if you're a content creator subscribe to our channel because we release weekly videos all about filmmaking thanks and we'll see you in another one.
