How To Create Bloom Glow Effect In DaVinci Resolve - In this video, Will teaches you how to create a bloom highlights glow effect in DaVinci Resolve. This effect is very easy to do in Resolve because unlike other programs, there's a built in effect preset that you can apply that has a ton of options to perfect the loom you're going for!
In today's video, I'm going to teach you a cool effect known as the bloom effect or the highlights glow effect. There are a few different names for it, but the results look great. Again, it's very, very quick and easy to do in DaVinci Resolve. There's literally an effect for it, which makes it so much easier.
If you're new here, we have over 200 videography-related videos, so lots of content for you to learn from. If you want to know any of the music or the equipment we use to make our videos, all links are in the description. Let's jump in.
Alright, with DaVinci Resolve open, I have four clips loaded into the timeline. We're in the edit page, and these are the four clips: you have a shot of a lake, a shot looking up at trees on an overcast day, a shot of myself looking up at a glacier, and then the last shot is a skateboard trick at sunset. We're going to be using these clips to add the bloom glow highlights effect. It's super easy to do.
Let's go back to the first clip. We'll make sure that the effects tab is open, and we will type in "glow." Let's bring that down to our first clip, and you can see that if I cycle it on and off, it is only being applied to certain areas of the frame based on the footage itself. So, in this case, up here at the top left, it is pretty bright; that is the area that it will be applied to. Further down, we have a whole bunch of other settings, like the spread and even the color if you wanted to add some color to the glow effect. It's just that simple.
Let's go ahead and see how it works on this clip. We'll add the glow effect, and you can see it blows it out. You might be going for this type of look; for me, I think this is a little too strong, so we'll pull that back a bit and go up to the shine threshold. Then, with the global blend at the bottom, we can adjust how much we want overall. We'll cycle that on and off and then go to the next clip.
With this one, because the sky is blown out, it probably won't look that great on this clip, so it's good to know the limitations of the effect. In this one, you can see it just sort of blows everything out. To control it, we would probably turn it almost entirely off, and at that point, it's not really doing much. So, let's move on to this clip. We'll try to select the frame where the skateboard is right in front of the sun. We'll add the glow, and this is an excellent clip for this type of effect because most of the clip is dark, and then we have this really bright spot where the sun is, where we want our eyes to look. You can really see how well this effect can work if it's on the right clip. This almost gives it a dream-like look. We'll cycle it on and off to see the difference.
We'll go back and play that clip. That's an easy way to stylize your clips and add this glow highlights bloom effect. As I mentioned, it doesn't work on every clip, so keep it in mind as something you can use to make your clips look better when it calls for it. That's how you create the bloom highlights effect. It's amazing, and I think this is why a lot of people are gravitating towards DaVinci Resolve because their workflows and the effects and plugins that just come with it are so good and so powerful.
